End of the Year Reflection:

Math class this year helped me by learning different units and graphing quadratic functions and also helping use my skills for completing my PBAT. Yes I wouldn't mind sending my letter to the can company. I think next you should be more thoroughly while explaining. It was hard understanding so I think if you break down the math a little hopefully they will understand better.

Exit Slip

The overall task of today's lesson was to show our calculations and record our data in google docs so we can have visuals for our PBAT presentations. This is necessary because we have minimize our SA in order to keep our volume the same. It is good that we have our calculations in order to show the work we did and be able to explain it and have it organized on google docs!

Exit Slip

My new Surface Area is going to be used in my PBAT as my calculations of my height and radius of my can. The ultimate goal is to minimize the surface area while keeping the volume the same by making the product cheaper. If I were to present this as a visual I would solve for height and I would show how to substitute in height in order to solve for Surface Area.

Exit Slip

It is important to combine two formulas because once you solve for one you can substitute in the answer to solve the next equation. If I were to connect this same skill to my can I would be able to find my height and substitute it in, in order to find the surface area of my can.

Exit Slip

The overall task of this PBAT is to minimize the Surface Area while maintaining the volume of the content. By doing this we have to determine our radius, and find surface area. Also substitute radius and volume in order to find the height. The purpose is using a can that is shaped like a cylinder and the two models that the company requires.

Exit Slip

The most important concept of the lesson was to learn how to find the height and be able explain our tables ad graphs because when we present our PBATS this is very important and to show that we showed our understanding of each step we did...The mathematical tool that I used today is the calculator and it is very important because it helped me determine my calculations..it made my job easier because I didn't have to do it by hand...

Exit Slip

We helped each other by going over out review sheets and the notes Wan had provided us with. If one of us missed a step my other group member would help me out. Today I was able to find the volume and surface area of my can and I was also able to record my data on google docs so when I later present my project I can always go back and look at my data. The skills that I learned were how to use the equation tool on google docs in order to record math data in the right way. I also used the skill of finding volume of a cylinder and surface area of a cylinder. I can use this skill outside of school by measuring the height for surface area and measuring diameter for the volume to try and figure out if the can is filled up or did they use a size enough can.

Exit Slip Lesson 4

-The curvature of y1 is wider compared to y2, and y2 is narrower.

-Y1 is vertically shifted up compared to y2, which is shifted down.

-It is not shifted horizontally

Exit Slip Lesson 3

By comparing and contrasting two functions you look for what they have in common and try to figure out why they are different. Also you use the categories section which you list the two functions after you have created your functions and graphed them on google docs. Also you compare or contrast the highest degree. Also it should be kind of easy because the two functions graphed look very similar but are flipped.

Exit Slip 4/9

One major idea that I learned is how to create an table and graph on a spreadsheet.

One major problem I had was remembering what to put on the y-axis in order to drag it down to receive the answers. Next time I will surely remember what to do in order to do this correctly by myself.

Progress Update

As I said before in my last post my group and I are just now catching up and we will start to graph. We did four different designs for each company and prepared tables including x values, length, width, height, girth, total, and volume. We had to choose different x values for each design and whatever was x was the height, and width was 2X the height and to find the girth you had to add width plus height, width plus height. In order to find the length you had to subtract the total from girth which our total was 130 for Fed-ex Express. Then in order to find volume we had to multiply Length, Height, and Width. Then by generalizing for finding my function I had to substitute x maximum into the function in order to determine what my answer would be. My fuction was (130-6x)(x)(2x). The answer came out to 18082.30. All i need to do is to graph and I need to graph is my x values and the volume and I will update you...

Homework

My group was behind simply because we started off lacking group members...but now we are starting to catch up and hopefully we can finishing graphing by tomorrow...this is not easy and there are a lot of steps to follow and even more distracting for me because I do not like math..

My Group

My group is not up to date but we are willing to work our hardest today...we only have to tables but we are working towards getting our graphs done

Clarification Q and A

Is this practice or is this our actual PBAT?

What are the challenges of this project?

How much help would you provide for this project?

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Today is the first day of our new project. I am very overwhelmed because it is FedEx Express and we have to determine the Length and Girth formula. We also have to find the maximum height but it may be challenging but I am ready to accomplish this. This is a practice for the PBAT and this is good because I could have a better understanding what it is going to be about.
